Plot Review:
Miss Taylor, Emma Mobi Woodhouse’s friend and former governess, has tied the knot with Mr. Weston. Emma decides that she enjoys matchmaking and takes credit for their marriage after introducing them. Emma pursues her new interest after returning to Hartfield with her father, despite the advice of her friend Mr. Knightley, who is also Emma’s older sister Isabella’s brother-in-law. She tries to match her new friend Harriet Smith with the local vicar, Mr. Elton.
Even though Harriet likes Robert Martin, a respectable, educated, and well-spoken young farmer, Emma convinces Harriet to decline his marriage proposal. A social climber named Mr. Elton makes the mistaken assumption that Emma is in love with him and proposes to her. He is appalled because he considers Harriet to be socially inferior when Emma reveals that she thought he was attached to Harriet.
