Plot Review:

The first seven chapters cover a single day in the life of Babbitt Epub. Babbitt adores his ten-year-old daughter Tinka, tries to steer his 22-year-old daughter Verona away from her newly discovered socialist leanings, and encourages his 17-year-old son Ted to work harder in school over breakfast. He dictates letters at the office and talks to his employees about real estate advertising. Babbitt starts to feel dissatisfied with “The American Dream” over time, so he tries to forget about it by going camping in Maine with Paul Riesling, a close friend and former roommate from college.

Despite the trip’s ups and downs, the two men consider it a success overall and are upbeat about the coming year. Babbitt learns that Paul killed his wife Zilla on the day he is elected vice president of the booster club. In an effort to assist Paul, Babbitt immediately drives to the jail where he is held.

About The Author (Sinclair Lewis):

American playwright and writer Harry Sinclair Lewis. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work in 1930, making him the first American and first Latin American writer to do so.
