Plot Review:
The Monkey King, a character from the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, is Yang’s contemporary adaptation of the Chinese tale of the Kung Fu-practicing Monkey King of Flower-Fruit Mountain. The original story’s Buddha is replaced by Yang’s Tze-Yo-Tzuh, a Christian deity.
The Monkey King is dissatisfied with himself as a monkey throughout the story, and he constantly tries to become another version of himself. The Monkey King gets bigger and becomes more human. He kills every deity that has been sent to stop him after being excluded from a divine dinner party and grows stronger with each kill.
The lesser deities beg the world’s most powerful being, Tze-Yo-Tzuh, to put an end to The Monkey King. Tze-Yo-Tzuh makes an effort to assist The Monkey King in accepting who he is, but when The Monkey King refuses, Tze-Yo-Tzuh chains him up beneath a rocky mountain.
