Plot

Lucy Snowe, the book’s 14-year-old protagonist and unreliable narrator, lives at the home of her godmother Mrs. Bretton in England’s “the clean and ancient town of Bretton.” John Graham Bretton, the family’s adolescent son who goes by Graham, and Paulina Home, also known as Polly, a 6-year-old visitor, are also residing there. Doctors have advised Polly’s father to travel to lift his spirits after the recent death of Polly’s mother, who had neglected her daughter.

Mrs. Bretton invites Polly to stay. Polly is a serious young girl who stands out from other children. Polly quickly develops a deep love for Graham, who lavishes her with love and attention. However, Polly’s visit is cut short when her father shows up and asks her to come live with him in another country. Lucy moves out of Mrs. Bretton’s house a few weeks after Polly leaves for unknown reasons.
