Gertrude Coppard, the refined daughter of a “good old burgher family,” meets Walter Morel, a rough-hewn miner, at a Christmas dance. The two of them fall into a whirlwind romance marked by physical passion. However, shortly after she marries Walter, she realizes the difficulties of living off of his meager salary in a rented house. Walter goes to the pub every day after work after the couple fights and start to drift apart. Mrs. Morel gradually turns her affections toward her sons, beginning with William, the oldest.
William cannot enjoy the fair without his mother because he is so attached to her as a boy. He protects her from his father’s occasional violence as he gets older. He eventually moves out of their home in Nottinghamshire and takes a job in London, where he begins to rise to middle class status.
