Plot Review:

Caroline Meeber, or “Sister Carrie Epub” to her family, is 18 years old when she leaves Columbia City, Wisconsin, in late 1889 to live in Chicago with her older sister Minnie and her husband. Carrie meets Charles Drouet, a traveling salesman who is drawn to her due to her unassuming demeanor and simple beauty.

They exchange contact information, but she writes to Drouet to discourage him from calling her at her sister’s apartment after discovering the “steady round of labor” and melancholy atmosphere there. The Hansons receive the majority of Carrie’s meager salary for room and board as soon as she accepts a machine operator position in a shoe factory.

She meets Drouet one day after an illness costs her her job. He convinces her to move in with him and leave her monotonous, restricted life. He hands Carrie two ten-dollar bills to make his point and gives her access to more financial options.

About The Author (Theodore Dreiser):

Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser was a naturalist-school journalist and novelist from the United States. His protagonists frequently achieved success despite lacking a clear moral code in his works.
