Plot Review:
Seven years after Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth split up, the story begins: Anne fell in love and accepted a marriage proposal from Wentworth, a young, unproven naval officer, when she was just 19 years old. Wentworth was thought to be smart, confident, and ambitious, but Anne’s friends and family thought he wouldn’t be a good partner because of his low social status. Sir Walter Elliot, Anne’s father, and Elizabeth, her older sister, maintained that a woman from Kellynch Hall, the family estate, could not compete with Wentworth.
In addition, Anne was persuaded to end the engagement by Lady Russell, a distant relative who Anne considers to be her second mother after her own death. Lady Russell also thought the relationship was foolish for a young person, so Anne broke off the engagement.
