Plot
Prince Hamlet of Denmark is the son of King Hamlet, who passed away recently, and the nephew of King Claudius, the brother and successor of his father. Claudius took the throne for himself after hurriedly marrying Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother and widow of King Hamlet. King Hamlet killed Norway’s King Fortinbras in a battle some years ago, ending a long-running rivalry between Denmark and Norway.
Even though Denmark defeated Norway and the ailing brother of King Fortinbras took the Norwegian throne, Denmark is worried that Prince Fortinbras, the son of the dead Norwegian king, will lead an invasion. The sentries Bernardo and Marcellus meet on the Danish royal castle’s ramparts on a cold night to talk about a ghost that looks like the late King Hamlet.
They also bring Prince Hamlet’s friend Horatio as a witness. The three make a promise to Prince Hamlet to tell him what they saw when the ghost comes back.
